Meet Chandrakala, one of the amazing women who learned to drive an auto through the Low Emission Access to Public Transport (LEAP) program. For over a year, she has helped bridge the gap in last-mile connectivity to and from Bengaluru Metro stations in her electric autorickshaw! Chandrakala and other women are significantly underrepresented in India’s transport sector. The LEAP program, led by Alstom and implemented by WRI India, aimed to address this issue by training women to drive electric autorickshaws around Namma Metro stations.
These women have not only improved last-mile connectivity but have also achieved financial stability through a guaranteed salary, making a lasting difference in their communities. Over 20 women have completed the training program so far and are now earning stable incomes, contributing to more inclusive urban mobility systems in Bengaluru.
